Ewer
China. Qing dynasty, second half 18th century
Baitong, commonly called paktong (white brass)
H27.4 cm (10 3/4 in.)
Loosely based on an early 18th-century European silver model, this ewer was made in southern China for export to the West. It is made of separate sections seamed together to form the body and the foot. The handle, cast separately, was applied to the completed body.
Related ewers in forms frequently catalogued as ‘helmet-shaped’ and with shell-shaped basins painted with coloured enamels were made in Canton for export are frequently ascribed an early 18th century date but may well be late 18th century.
