Tripod Table with Marble Top

A padouk tripod table of unusual form with a circular marble inset top contained within a four-part border carved with leafy tendrils interspersed at the joints with leaves and a pseudo-heraldic device. The underside of this frame with pendant a moulding. The top is supported on three spreading curved supports with scrolled ends that join in a cluster in the centre where they are carved with leafy swags before spreading outwards to terminate in scrolled feet with floral swags. The underside of one leg stamped Strahan, Dublin.

Strahan, Robert; Robert Strahan & Co. (1776 – 1969). There appear to be three generations, each named Robert, who ran this cabinet making business in Dublin. Robert (1776 – 1850), described as an upholsterer, his son, also Robert, described as a cabinetmaker (1812 – 1895) and his grandson, Robert W., described as a master cabinetmaker and house furnisher (1863 – 1939).
