A hand-coloured folio sheet of engravings showing the costumes of the Chinese emperor and his concubines, an engraved print from Chatelain’s monumental seven volume Atlas Historique, one of the most famous and prolific works of the early 18th century.
 
Zacharie Chatelain (d. 1723) was the father of Henri Abraham Chatelain (1684 – 1743) and Zacharie Chatelein Junior (1690 – 1754). They worked as a partnership publishing the Atlas Historique under several different Chatelain imprints in seven volumes between 1705 and 1720.
 
The central engraving is taken from an earlier publication, with some variations, of 1667 from Athanasius Kircher, Imperii Sino-Tartarici Supremus Monarcha (Supreme monarch of the Sino-Tartar empire). This is most likely a depiction of the Shunzhi emperor.

A hand-coloured folio sheet of engravings showing a view of a bridge in Xensi province with a description in French of Xensi province. Bordering this are eleven examples of Chinese dress from different provinces. Showing various people in their typical dress including physicians, religious figures, royalty, soldiers, farmers and commoners from Hunan, Sichuan, Shanxi, Huqueng, Chekiang, Tartary, Quansi, Quicheu, Fokien and Nankin regions. From Chatelain’s monumental seven volume Atlas Historique, one of the most famous and prolific works of the early 18th century.
